Windmill Grant from State Farm Insurance Check Presentation Ceremony (February 2009) On February 23, 2009, State Farm Insurance presented a check of over $98,000 to the Stepping Stones Montessori parent organization and to Augusta Schools for the installation of four windmills, two at each site. The grant will also fund computers and other learning aides to be used in conjunction with studying wind power. Some students spoke about the advantages of wind power, and Maeghan Maloney, parent and Augusta lawyer, described the project to the audience. See the “Windmill Project” page for more information.
Children Make Music at Togus VA Medical Center (February 2009) On February 12, 2009, a dozen students helped out at the Four Chaplains Service at Togus VA Hospital. The annual ceremony honors four chaplains who gave their lives for other soldiers in the line of duty. The Star Spangled Banner was played by four of our young violinists (also students of Pineland Suzuki School). Several of our children assisted in singing America with the congregation. Those who attended the ceremony were very impressed by these young musicians!
2nd Annual Valentines Day Raffle Brings in Over $1000 for Playground Improvements (February 2009) The 2nd annual Valentine Raffle, benefiting the Stepping Stones Montessori parent orgaanization’s playground account, was a huge success! The fundraising goal for the project was $500, but students and families raised over $1,000! This is a great start toward the goal of purchasing more up-to-date and long-lasting playground equipment for our students. Great job, everyone!
Blaine House Reception for Recycling Poster Contest Winners (February 2009) On February 4, 2009, Tessa, Grade 5, was honored at a Blaine House ceremony for her winning recycling poster, “Recyclables Still Have Life.” Chosen as one of 13 statewide winners from a pool of over 1,900 entries, this poster appears tin the 2009 Maine Recycles Calendar. Congratulations, Tessa!
School-level Geographic Bee Results (January 2009) The school winner of the 2009 Geography Bee is 7th grader, Carlene. Runners up were Tessa, Grade 5, and Langdon, Grade 6. Carlene has now taken a qualifying test to compete at the state level. Congratulations, Carlene!
